Catherine’s must-have summer piece: DIY High Waisted Shorts

DIY High Waisted Shorts

“My summer must have by far has to be DIY high waisted shorts. I love how comfortable these shorts are and how each one is so different from the other. Its also a very cheap alternative; especially for us college students. The best thing about DIY high waisted shorts are that you can personalize them according to your style and you can be assured how ever you personalize it, no one else will have the same pair. There are multiple tutorials online that can show you how to not only just make the shorts but also how to create a distressed look as well; which is my all time favorite.”

How to Get Your Own:

  1. Go to your local goodwill/thrift store and buy a pair of denim that you like. Be sure that the waits fits and that there is enough room in the leg areas for after you cut them. I usually go to the men’s department and buy a pair of classic Levi jeans.

  1. Depending on the length you want them to be try on the jeans (after you wash them of course) and mark where you plan on cutting them and make sure it is even on both sides. I like to try on after ever cut just to make sure I am not cutting them too short.

  1. Once the jeans are cut and to your liking, add a personal touch. I like to add lace linings under the pockets. Other ideas could be distressing your shorts. By taking either scissors or a blade and gently scraping along the top layer of the fabric (make sure you don’t cut through both sides) you can create a quick, easy, trendy distressed look in no time.

All in all this summer essential is key in my closet for lazy days running errands, which I’ll pair with cute gladiator sandals and a classic t-shirt, for days at the lake and need something to cover up, and even for girls night out with friends on the town but adding a blazer and maybe wedges to elevate my look.
